Bums. I'm not a big fan. I tell you one thing I don't miss about Madison is avoiding all the bums on state street. My roomate had a sweet system worked out with one of them. Every morning he'd have to walk past a park where they'd always ask for change, and knowing how much this was going to piss him off on a daily basis he came up with a solution. He bought the bum out. He gave him ten bucks early in the semester and told him that if he gave him the money, him and none of his buddies could bother him for the rest of the year. From then on he no longer was bothered by the bums and instead got a simple head nod as he walked to class.
Some friends this weekend were telling me about Chicago bums and I found the stories interesting. Evidently Chicago has developed a breed of choosy bums. In one story a friend saw the bum, and decided to do something nice so he walked into a convenience store and bought the bum some peanuts, thinking protein this'll be good. When he gave said peanuts to the bum the bum looked at them and said, "Oh yeah, thanks this is great, but could you go back in there and get me some gummy bears?" And in another tale a friend offered a cupcake to a bum who was asking for food with his son thinking the son would love a nice cupcake and the father said "No, I'm holding out for a cheeseburger." Holding out for a cheeseburger, I hope I never have that problem.
Anyway, saw this clip and that got me thinking of bums, check out Life & Times of Tim on HBO tonight.
